Is Effexor XR also used for OCD? What else is it used for other than depression? Any others? Side affects anyone experienced? I started it for a day but quit it due to a fast heart neat and pressure behind my eyes. I had dilated pupils too.Whats the normal side affects? Is it normal to feel like this ? should I continue? I told my pharmacist but they didn't seem to care. I take it for post partum ans anxiety. Im scared to take it though because my old psych told me I was possible bi polar. It kept me up thinking all night. Post partum depression and yes after one day of taking the med.I have always been really sensitive to medication, so is my dad. I took the med in the afternoon and started feeling like that at night. i stopped the med cause I'm scared. I had a almost fatal reaction to abilify along time ago. Honestly every time I try a new anti depressant I feel worse than I did before I take it and thats why my primary is started me on a snri instead of a sri.

Scott K replied: "It's used for anxiety and depression, I would think that would include obsessive compulsive disorder. All of the pills have a load of potential side effects. The ones you mentioned look like common problems. check out this page it has all of the info on the drug."

Someones' Mom replied: "Post Partum what? Post partum refers to after giving birth.....post partum depression refers to onset of depression after giving birth. Please see the following search result for possible Effexor XR side effects. But after only one day of taking the medication??"

aquaregia31 replied: "Did you take any other drugs with it or recently? Because what you describe can be serotonin syndrome : "Serotonin syndrome is a potentially life-threatening adverse drug reaction that may occur following therapeutic drug use, inadvertent interactions between drugs, overdose of particular drugs, or the recreational use of certain drugs...........Symptom onset is usually rapid, often occurring within minutes after self-poisoning or a change in medication. Mild symptoms may only consist of tachycardia, shivering, diaphoresis (sweating), mydriasis (dilated pupils), myoclonus (intermittent tremor or twitching), as well as overresponsive reflexes. Moderate intoxication includes additional abnormalities such as hyperactive bowel sounds, hypertension and hyperthermia; ..... Mental status changes include hypervigilance and agitation" If you felt as badly as you describe do not take it again. A mild nausea or a headache would be considered a "normal side effect" but I do not think that what you describe is normal. Discuss it with your physician and ask him to try another medicine (if you really think that you need medicines). Do not forget to tell him about any other medicines you take or took recently. Good luck!"

I have been prescribed Effexor for depression, anxiety, and OCD. Anyone know much about this medication? thank you for your words of encouragement. :-) Some days are really hard when there are so many different things to deal with constantly.... and that's just inside my own head! I try to stay level-headed about all of this. I have been dealing for 15 years. I was on other antidepressants and given ativan to take when I was freaking out. Now I just want to find something that will do it for me. :-)

sexy replied: "i don't take it,, but i heard that it works for all your symptoms, you can always go on the sites and see what other people on it saids"

chiclover replied: "I've been on Effexor XR for over 4 years, pretty much for the same reason you are. I'm also on Lithium (which I hate) for borderline personality disorder (or so I'm told). Anyway, regarding Effexor, it does have side effects, such as possible wt. gain, dizziness, and trouble sleeping. But they only last a bit and are tollerable. A huge word of cautiion: don't stop taking it all at once. It has harsh withdrawls. But, hon, don't be afraid to take it ~ life can be better than it is now."

Annie B replied: "I have been on Effexor XR since October and I will tell you it is the best thing that has happened to me. I started taking it for anxiety issues, but have found it helps considerably with depression, and social anxiety which I didn't consider to be a big issue until I felt the change. I am a big advocate of effexor but with all meds they don't work the same for everyone. The best I can describe it is that I am more of myself while on Effexor. However, DO NOT SKIP A DOSE. I missed one day and I went off on a tangent to my boss. I am on 150 mg but plan on going to 225 because of change in stress levels (i.e. I was just promoted to a more stressful job). I hope it works as well for you. I work in the health care industry and I will tell you at least half if not more are on some kind of anti-anxiety/deppresant that I work with. Good luck and ask your md if they have a card so you can get a discount on effexor for the first 6 months. ( I only pay $8 a month which is a nice bonus). Stick with it because like with all anti-depressants/anxiety meds it is hard to go on and off."

What is a good medicine for OCD to combine with Effexor XR? I take 150 mg Effexor XR for anxiety depression. Depression is all gone! Some Anxiety can still exist... so I take valium as needed before any anxiety inducing episode. So...both of those are taken care of...but I have and have always had...extreme OCD-ritualistic thoughts and patterns which are driving me bananas......so does anyone know of a safe medicine for OCD to take with the other medications I take?.....any suggestions would be nice!

Dr T replied: "most ocs don't respond well to meds. that's why you see so many of them just barely on the functional level. it's a lifetime condition that needs to be dealt with on the mental level. find someone who specializes in ocds who can help you learn how to redirect your thoughts. your family dr is not the place to go for a mind tune-up."

AB replied: "Same medications (SSRIs like Prozac, Luvox, and Zoloft, SNRIs like Effexor, or Tricyclic antidepressants like clomipramine) are used to treat OCD, but higher than typical antidepressant doses are usually necessary. Discuss with your psychiatrist on how to maximize the Effexor XR dose may be up to 300mg daily. You may not have to take a combination if your symptoms are controlled by a relatively high dose of one medication. The only issue is your anxiety which may get worse if the dose is increased too quickly. So you psychiatrist will have to be cautious. In addition, psychotherapy is likely to help (in combination with the medications)."

does effexor xr work for ocd? Also if you found it worked for your ocd and depression symptoms did you find it took a higher dosage to alleviate your symptoms.

mscarlybobarlysmom replied: "no, from what I've seen with my husband, NO!, it will always be an issue, it's just how you deal with it. We've tried hypnotism, acupuncture, aromatherapy. Therapy may help slightly, but it will always be there."

Ph_D replied: "If you have been diagnosed with OCD, you are doing yourself a disservice by not engaging in a form of therapy known as cognitive behavioral therapy (aka CBT) and the specific skill of response-prevention. The standard of care for OCD is not medication, in fact research has repeatedly demonstrated all medications to be inferior to CBT. This same research demonstrates that between 70 and 85% of patients are symptom free or near symptom free at treatment completion. Another benefit this form of therapy has over medication, is that it is time limited, typically 10 to 30 sessions. You should use the website posted below to find a therapist near you who treats OCD. You will want to find who has either a Ph.D. or Psy.D. Good luck."

Would drinking tea flush the effexor out of my system? Im 12 and just started taking effexor for ocd/depersonalization disorder, and depression. since tea is an anti-oxident im scared it will flush it outta my system

Can you get OCD from taking effexor (venaflaxine 37.5)? Recently I had a panic attack and hyperventilated. I have been taking venaflaxine for the last 2 weeks since November 18th. Lately I have been getting these thoughts that just keep coming back over and over. Intrusive thoughts and I never got them before the medicine. What could it be? Any help. Thanks Obssesive Compusilve Disorder

Jack B replied: "can u get wha?"

lrd00a replied: "I take Pristiq, which is an isomer of Effexor, and it cut down tremendously on the side effects I had when I was taking Effexor. When you go to your next check up, discuss your symptoms with the doctor, he may want to switch you to another med and further treatment options."

puckbunnietwo4 replied: "You can't "get" a disorder like OCD from taking medication. You may be having a side effect from it though. You should speak to your doctor about this. Were you prescribed the effexor for panic attacks? If so, I think your diagnosis and medication should be re-evaluated. Good Luck!"

Has anyone found that Effexor didn't work well for you and you switched to an SSRI with success? I have depression, ocd and generalized anxiety disorder. I'm on Effexor 300mg and am still worrying all the time. My doctor is thinking of trying Zoloft. I'm scared because I feel like this is almost a step down. I thought Effexor was the best anti-depressant since it works on two levels of the brain and Zoloft only works on one. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Gabe replied: "Explain this to your doctor. However, not all medications work the same for everyone. What works for you might make someone horrible, and vice vers. Cymbalta works on both sides of the brain, maybe give it a shot. It helped me out for the first 2 months. Im actually thinkin of going on effexor"

luteachris replied: "Sorry I am not a great believer in over medicating people and giving multiple diagnosis either! Your Doctor, is it an MD, or Psychiatrist? I think you need to have counseling to resolve your issues not only to medicate them."

I have physical symptoms due to my depression, anxiety, and OCD. How long before Effexor helps this? I hadn't told my new doc about my disorders and he figured it out because of my physical problems, like trouble breathing, nausea, shakes, weakness, and tiredness, with no medical reasons causing these symptoms. He suggested depression. I told him that I have it and have had it for 15 years, along with general anxiety disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. He prescribed Effexor. My breathing has gotten worse and the other symptoms have not changed. Do you know how long it will take to change? hmmmm.... I'm done 4 weeks, I think....

DAISY GIRL replied: "You should notice something in two weeks...but I think it is like 4 or 6 weeks for the full effect."

e_kate33 replied: "You will usually start to see the effects after a few days but usually your doctor will need to play with the levels a bit to get ti right. If nothing has chaged by about 4 weeks, go and see your doctor because he made need to play with your levels."

jessica g replied: "most meds like that can take up to 2 months for there full effect. but if it doesn't take the full effects by that time you should talk to your dr it may be the wrong med for you. you should also have your dr monitor your meds it least once a month when you start a new med like that. Also, be carefull effexor has horrible side effects and is horrible to wean off of. Everyone I know that has taken it has the same side effects. So watch out for that. Good luck."

OCD with depression and NO energy Please help any advice for good meds or other help? I am a 27 year old stay at home mom of 2 boys ages 2 & 7. I have no desire to get up for any thing other than my family's most basic needs. I have had mild OCD since childhood, depression since my teenage years on & off. I also have serious anger issues (rage for nothing). This is the worst I can't function!! I have tried paxil helped for a while but still no energy & major weight gain (40lbs) Tried effexor & wellbutrin combo I feel terrible. Please help me to find a way to be a good Mother again.

shelle4392 replied: "it is sooo hard to be a mother and you will get threw it I do prozac and that works for me"

allamericanred2 replied: "go back and see another doc-- trust me there is something out there that will help be it meds or therapy- you kids deserve a mom Been there"

Answers is run by hippocrites replied: "Are you seeing a psychiatrist and a psychologist? You might not have been taking enough of the Paxil. How much were you taking? The Paxil should have taken care of the anger issues also."

javadic replied: "Have your thyroid checked. Hypothyroidism's major first symptoms are no energy and weight gain and depression. Get some help for your anger issues. Take an anger management course at your local mental health center."

starburst80 replied: "I have the same problems. I'm taking Celexa... no weight gain, and a big energy booster (It is shown to have the least side effects of all antidepressants). I believe that therapy is also necessary as well. Celexa has been good for me, but you may have to try different things because it may not work for you in the same way. Good luck!"

slittle replied: "ok i understand a bit what you are going through, i have major depression, ocd, bulimia and panic attacks, work full time and a single parent of a 5yr old boy. so yes it can get bad at times, but i never got help til i hit my rock bottom, which might be were you are at right now. i suggest that you go see a psychologist (or even a social worker at a mental health clinic) and just talk to them like once or twice a week. stay off meds until you find the root of your problems (why you are depressed, what happenend in your life, what is going on in your life now, etc). also be honest and fully participate and do what the psychologist/social worker suggest you do. maybe even get your older son involved in your sessions, let him now whats going on with you and how to cope with it. if you just need to rant and rave, send me an email i am here to help you if you want. but do get help please. good luck!!"

meroromancer replied: "First, rule out the physical. Sometimes, it is true that thirty year olds can go through an early menopause. As far as the psychotropics, I too have tried the Paxil, and am still on it. I have had to drop it from time to time. Sometimes, it just peters out, you drop it a couple months and then resume it and it usually works. Right now I am on Lamictal, it is a serious mood stabilizer, in that the side effects are things that you have to watch with a critical eye. I am not wondering if Risperdal or Serequel would help you. Both are considered, "Anti-Psychotics", however, they both do give some relief of depressive symptoms and give you a more "restful" sleep. I'm not sure what your sleep is like but when it isn't good you can go from grouch to rage a lot of times. If you are not getting help physically with checking for menopause, and the drugs are not helping your anger, you may need some anger management therapy. I know it isn't what you want to hear, but they may have a workbook that you can do at home to minimize your "having to get out of the house and leaving your little ones at home." Also it's obvious you can get onto the net, try looking into some anger management sites that may give you some "workbook" pages. Best of Luck!"

decepticans405 replied: "You could ask your doctor about zoloft. It helps with anxiety/depression and ocd, plus other things. I'm on it now and have only been on for a little over a week and I think its helping somewhat. I'm not tired in that weird way that I used to be. I do think it might be affecting my sleep, but I'm not sure yet. Still though, everything affects people differently so your reactions could be different than mine are. I'll also recommend that you have a healthy diet and exercise. I know its hard to have any motivation to exercise when you're depressed, but I promise once you start to do it, you'll feel better. Not completely, but it really helps, and gives energy. There is an over the counter medication called St. Johns Wort. It could help your depression too. You could try this for a while and see if it helps. I really hope you find something! Your children can of course be motivation for you to keep going, to get that exercise in. Maybe try getting involved in a new activity with them. Could be taking an evening walk with them, or throwing a frisbee. Listening to music and dancing. Anything!!! Good luck! I hope you find the help that you need :)"

wwwiley2 replied: "My son suffered from OCD and depression since age 7. He took Zoloft for years and did extremly well. I have suffered from depression with the anger issues for years. Prozac is the drug for me. Never had a problem with fatigue or weight gain with either one. I've tried the others. They are HORRIBLE!"

skipper_727 replied: "Have you seen a Psychiatrist? If you haven't, I strongly recommend it if you can, financially. I know far too many people who were incorrectly diagnosed and the wrong medications (or incorrect dosages) by their general practitioner. The right combination of medications -- or just the right med alone - is out there. Have you had your thyroid checked? Please consider you are still a good mother who is going through a rough time. Don't be too hard on yourself."

Who had had experience with a combination of Wellbutrin and Effexor? I am currently on 150mg of Wellbutrin and 300 mg of Effexor daily as well as 100mg of Seroquel at night. I have BPD, dyshtymia and OCD and wondering if others have had benefits from this cocktail

fiVe replied: "Everyone benefits from a different cocktail, but it's great that you found something that works for you. It took me years to get on the right meds."
